Our Cover Letter Secrets:

1) Make it crystal clear who you are. When a hiring manager is reading your cover letter, they have no clue about you and your background. In the very first paragraph, you need to let them know who you are and what position you are applying for.

2) Make it extremely professional. Don't fall for gimmicky papers or formats. Use a unique, but professional format for your cover letter and resume. Your cover letter tells the hiring manager what type of employee you will be. So, make sure you tell them that you will be a consummate professional.

3) Highlight your qualifications, accomplishments, and certifications. Give them a quick run-down on your best points from your career. Make sure that they are relevant to the position that you are applying for.

4) Make sure you address it to the right person. There is nothing worse than sending out a cover letter that isn't addressed to the correct person. Take the time to make a phone call and find out how to address your cover letter.

5) Include bits of information to show that you have done your research. Include a few judiciously placed bits of information about the company in your cover letter. This will tell the hiring manager that you are ambitious and hard-working enough to do the up front research necessary to win the job.

6) Tell the hiring manager exactly why you want to work for them. Don't beat around the bush here. Tell the person why you want to this job.

7) There is no room for errors. Have a trusted friend read your cover letter to make sure that it sounds ok and has no errors.

8) Use bullets for accomplishments. Try to have a bulleted section in the center of the cover that quickly details your accomplishments and achievements. This will make your letter more readable.

9) Limit it to one page. Unless you are applying for an executive position, keep your cover letter to one page.

10) Request an interview. End your letter with a call to action. Just like a sales letter, your career cover letter should tell them to call you for an interview.
